TPO-03 - Integrated Writing Task Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rem

The article states that the painting known as 'Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet' was not really painted by Rembrandt and gives three reasons to prove it. The professor's opinion is that the painting was really drawn by Rembrandt and gives several reasons for it.

First, the article states that there was something inconsistent about the way woman was dressed. Professor refutes this opinion by stating that after various x-ray studies of the fur, it was determined that the fur was not the part of original painting. The fur was added to the painting after about a hundred years because someone wanted to increase its price. Thus, professor states that the elderly lady was in fact a servant and a fur collar was painted over the original painting.

Second, the passage posits that even though Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, in the painting the elements didn't fit together. However, professor says that this was because of the addition of the fur collar. Once the fur collar was removed, a light colored cloth became visible behind it. This cloth reflected light on the face of the elderly lady. As a result, the painting looked more realistic once the light cloth was revealed.

Third, the passage puts forth that the paintings back seemed as if many wooden pieces were stuck together even though Rembrandt always used a single piece of wood. Professor refutes this opinion by stating that the extra wooden pieces were added when the fur color was added. The wood panel was enlarged by adding extra wood pieces to make it look majestic. The original painting had only one piece. Furthermore, the single piece of wood matched with Rembrandt's another painting of his own portrait with a hat. Hence, professor explains that the wood used in painting was original and extra pieces were later added to the original work of Rembrandt.
