TPO-03 - Integrated Writing Task Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rem

The lecture and the reading are both about the painting called "Portrait of an Elderly woman". The author of the reading believes that the painting was not done by Rembrandt. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and she thinks the opposite by providing three supporting details for her claim.

First of all, the article points out that there was some mismatch in the clothing in the portrait which was unusual in Rembrandt painting. The lecturer is challenged by this point. She says that X-rays of the fur collar reveals that the original clothing was consistent with the white linen cap. Furthermore, she says that the fur collar was added by someone to increase the value of the painting.

Secondly, the author contends that the painting was missing light and shadow effect which was unique to Rembrandt. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She confirms that the original fur collar had single light coloured effect with a realistic effect that one can expect from Rembrandt painting.

Finally, the article states that the panel around the painting was made from numerous pieces of woods that stuck together. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that while adding the fur collar, they enlarged the painting in order to look more grandeur and valuable. So, these woods were added later on. However, the original wood was from the same tree that Rembrandt painted his self-portrait
