TPO-04 - Integrated Writing Task Endotherms are animals such as modern birds and mammals that keep their body temperatures constant. For instance, humans are endotherms and maintain an internal temperature of 37°C, no matter whether the environment is wa

The lecturer talks about the opinions of some scientists who do not agree that dinosaurs were endotherms. She says that the theory stated by the author of the passage, is somewhat irrelevant when compared with other scientific explanations.

First, polar regions used to be warmer in the past. Therefore, the temperature was warm enough for dinosaurs to survive in that areas. In addition, during winter the dinosaurs could have migrated to more friendly climates, or they could have hibernated as the present reptiles still use to do. This is a strong counter-point to what the passage indicates.

Second, the legs situated underneath its body serves not only for running. The author assumes that the animals who have the legs positioned at the body's side are not endotherms, pointing out that it was not the case of dinosaurs. However, the lecturer come with a reasonable explanation, stating that the position of the legs had the role to support large bodies. This is another standpoint that contradicts the author's point of view.

Third, the lectures says that even though the bone structure contains haversian canals, responsible for the rapid growth, their growth was relatively slow. This fact is proved by the existence of a growth ring. The latter one shows that during cold temperatures, the growing of the dinosaurs was slowing down considerably. This fact is directly contradicting the passage because the endotherms have the same growth rate both in low and high temperatures. In conclusion, the author and he lecturer appear to be in disagreement regarding this topic.
