TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The professor discusses about some reasons which imply that the settelments of Chaco Canyon have not been used in the way the article suggests. The information he presents contradicts facts that outlined in the reading passage.
First, the lecturer mentions that although the outside look of the Chaco Canyon looks like apartment buildings at Taos which can be suitable for many people to live in, its inside look suggests that not many people could live there since there existed only few fire places. If many people could live there, there should have been many fire places in order to help people cook their food. On the other hand, according to the reading, great number of people have been living there for hundreds of years.
Second, the speaker states that if Chao structures were suitable for storing food supplies, then it would have been easy to find some big containers in order to store grain maize. Since there were not any maize container in that place, it is not appropriate to suggest that these places were used for storing food supplies. However, the reading specifies that one of the most common crops used to be store there was grain maize, since this place had enormous size.
Third, the professor points out that the stuff have been found in this area does not necessarily prove that this place was used as ceremonial centers. For instance, according to the stuff found there, it suggests that these materials like sand and stone have been thrown away and they are related to activities like building construction. In addition, the containers perhaps belong to the construction workers. In contrast, the reading makes it clear that excavations have found deposits of many numerous broken pots proves that the place had ceremonial usage.
