TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The author describes that there are three main theories to specify how the great houses of Chaco Canyon settlements were utilized. On the other hand, the speaker states that unfortunately none of the arguments about the application of these massive stone buildings are convincing and refutes each of the author's reasons with rational grounds.
First of all, the writer states that the Chaco structures were merely residential, and hundreds of people lived there. Nevertheless, the professor points out that although outside of these buildings looked like Native American houses, inside of them did not indicate that hundreds of people lived there. To be more specific, if a large number of people had lived there, these houses should have had many fireplaces for daily cooking, yet few of them were observed in these houses. Furthermore, these large buildings should have enough rooms to provide an appropriate place for families to live, but there were just ten rooms which there were not enough for hundreds of people.
Second, according to the reading, the Chaco structures were utilized as a good place for the sake of storing food suppliers. Conversely, the speaker brings up the idea that there are some traces which uncover the fact that maize did not store in these great houses. As a matter of fact, if maize had been stored in these big containers, more split of maize should have been thrown there.
Third, the author expresses that the Chaco houses were used as ceremonial centers. However, the speaker posits that lots of materials were found through the excavations of the mound, such as building materials, construction tools, sand, and stone. To be more specific, these large structures can be used as trash container for construction materials that were thrown away. Besides, the broken pots that were found there might have been for the construction workers who shed them after their meal.
Therefore, the points mentioned in the reading do not make sense.
