TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it c

The author describes that the cause of the decline in sea otter populations of the Alaskan coast was probably environmental pollution and provides three reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the lecturer states that predators hypothesis seemed the most likely theory of rapidly declining in their populations and refutes each of the author's reasons with rational grounds.
First of all, the writer states that industrial chemical pollution is the more likely cause of the sea otter deaths and the water samples of Alaskan coast disclosure the increasing rate of the chemicals in that area. Nevertheless, the professor points out that no one could see the dead's body of the otters; accordingly, infection was not the cause of their death. In this regard, predator hypothesis is a more reasonable theory, owing to the fact that predators cannot wash their dead bodies on the shores.
Second, according to the reading, as other sea animals along the Alaskan coast were also declining, it was probable that otters were affecting other sea mammals. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that wales were disappeared because of the human hunters. In this regard, orcas changed their diet, and they ate other smaller mammals, such as seals, sea lions, and sea otter. As a result, declining in the populations of other sea mammals has nothing to do with pollution.
Third, the author expresses that the uneven pattern of otter decline clearly explained the pollution hypothesis. However, the speaker posits that as orcas are huge animals, they prefer not to live in shallow and rocky places, and in these locations, there was no decline in otters’ populations.
