TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it c

The reading and the lecture both discuss about sea otter. While the reading states that the decline of the sea otter was mainly because of the pollution near Alaska coast, The lecture cast doubt this idea by saying that predators are the primarily cause of this decline.

First of all, The reading claims that there are many industrial activities near the coast such as oil rigs and chemical plants that pollute the enviroment and the water causing the otters get infected. The professor counters this idea by saying that there is not evidence of sea otters getting infected. Moreover, he mentions that predators could have eaten this animals entirely without leaving any remains.

Secondly, The reading addresses that not only the pollution affects the sea otters but also other animals as well such as seals and sea lions. Furthermore, the reading says that predators such as orca does not need to hunt sea lions since they prefer to eat whales. The professor opposes to this idea by explaining that beacause of the human hunting of whales, the orcas opt for changing their diet, so they look for another pray such as the sea otters and others.

Finally, the reading passage points out that scientists have shown that sea otters in other parts of the reagion are not being affected by the decline. However, the ones that are near the coast of alaska are being impacted by a concentration of pollutants brought by oceans currents or other enviromental factors. The professor refutes this idea by saying that orcas find difficult to reach certain spots such as rockies locations so that is why the sea otters of the coast are the only ones that have been declining.
