The reading and the speaker discuss the decline of sea otters from different perspectives. The author of the reading believes that the sea otters decrease because of pollution and he gives three reasons to support his idea. However, the speaker casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He says that the sea otters have declined because of predator.
First of all, the author of the reading points out that pollution along Alaskan is the cause of extinction of the sea otters because there are many resources of industrial chemical pollution, which are located there. This point is challenged by the speaker. He restates the fact that if the sea otters are destroyed by the pollution, people will find a lot of their dead bodies. However, people did not find any dead body of sea otters along Alaskan coat. He puts forth the idea that the sea otters are eaten by predator .That is why people saw no trace of sea otters’ bodies.
Secondly, the author of the reading contends that pollution also causes of decline of other sea mammals, such as seals and sea lions. The speakers argues this idea by saying that orcas love to eat whale. However, since whale are extinct, they have to eat seals, loins and sea otters. Therefore, the populations of these animals are decreased significantly.
Finally, the author of the reading states that the population of sea otters along Alaskan have declined, other places remain stable. The speaker, on the other hand, opposes this point by explaining that it depends on location. Because orcas have a big size they cannot approach rocky and shallow places that is why these areas the population of sea otters have not declined.
