The reading and speaker discuss the issue of Robert E. Peary to the North Pole from different perspectives. The author of the reading points out that indeed Peary reaches the North Pole. However, the speaker casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He says that none of those ideas that the author of the reading has mentioned are unconvincing.
First of all, the author of the reading says that the National Geography Society committee proves that through the investigation of Peary's record concludes that he reaches the North Pole. This point is challenged by the speaker. He restates the fact that investigation did not show the records carefully once it took only two days, so the committee could not present a trustful conclusion about it. Moreover, the committee were not completely objective, once it was composed by Peary’s closest friends who financially contributed to his trip.
Secondly, the author of the reading contends that a recent expedition provides support for Peary's claim that he reached the North Pole in 37 days, and Tom Avery also made the same trek to the North Pole in less than 37 days. The speaker rebuts this claim by saying that the trip of Tom Avery is different from Peary. According to the professor, Avery carried less weight than Peary, once he was not carrying food on the sled, which was dropped by airplane, not forgetting to mention that Avery faced highly favorable weather conditions if compared to Peary’s. Hence, Avery’s expedition was too different from Peary’s to provide support to Peary’s claims.
Finally, the author of the reading states that the photographs, which are taken by Peary with the Sun's position in the sky shows that he took those pictures in the North Pole. The speaker, on the other hand, opposes this point by saying that Peary used the camera that could not focus in subjects. Therefore, those his pictures were not precise. Moreover, those picture were taken about 100 years ago. They are probably faded and blurred. As a result, they are not accurate.
