The reading and the lecture discuss the decline of the sea otter population –a small mammal from the western coast of North America-. Furthermore, experts have figured out what were the main causes of the decline such as pollution and predation. The author believes that environmental pollution explain better why have reduced the number of these animal species. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that newest proofs say that animal predation is the major cause.
First, the author comes up with the idea that oil rigs and sources of chemicals have been seen along the Alaskan coast. It is mentioned that the levels of chemicals in water samples from the area show clearly that pollutants cause the death of these otters by infecting them. However, the professor argues that nobody has found an otter died by infection, and otter may die hunted by predators because they cannot wash up on shore.
Second, the author states that other animals such as seals and sea lions have declined as well, so it is notable that they were affected by pollution. The article also notes that Orcas just hunted larger preys such as whales. The professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that as the whales disappeared from that area, orcas started to hunt smaller animals such as the aforecited. Therefore, the orca was the main hunter of sea otters.
Finally, the author contends that pollution pattern could be seen in different locations, for instance in Alaska the decline was massive, but in others, the population was the same. As a result, pollutants’ concentrations in the coast explain why pollution was the main cause. The professor, on the other hand, posits that orca predation also explains that orcas could or not access to some location, and as Alaska was accessible for them, they hunted as much as they could reducing the sea otters and the other sea species.
