The reading passage states that reading less literature has a harmful effect for the reading of public, culture and the future of literature. However, the lecturer cast doubt on each argument of the author.
First and foremost, the reading suggests because people read less literature they lost the benefits of it. Reading literature encourages the imagination of people and sustain them to expand their understanding of language. On the other hand, the professor rejected this by saying the literature is not only one which encourages the creativity of people. According to her, there are many other types of books that can support the creativity such as science fictions, political and histories.
Secondly, the article indicates people spend most of their time in entertainment things such as watch a TV, listening to music and surfing on the internet instead of reading literature which diminish the culture. In contrast, the lecturer argues that the ways of learning culture has changed, now people have more options to improve themselves and get information about the culture. She also said that there are many movies and music which dedicated to the culture.
Finally, the passage claims that the number of writers declining because of the lack of audiences even though they are talented or not. Nonetheless, the professor refuses that by explaining it is not only depend on the lack of audience, but the modern literature is hard to understand for normal people that is the responsibility of the author.
