TPO 12 - Jane Austen Portrait

The passage provides various reasons to connect a portrait painting to a famous novelist, whereas the professor in the lecture refutes the assertion by explaining contradictory pieces of evidence.

First of all, the author refers to the point that Austen's descendants have approved of that the painting is portraiting Austen in her adulthood. However, even though the lecturer finds this evidence related loosely connected to the assertion, he takes issue with this statement by saying that the family members confirmed Austin's painting seventy years after her death, and accordingly, they had never seen Austin as a teenager.

Furthermore, the professor challenges the claim in the writing that similarity between the portrait and the amateurish sketch of Austin is a reliable proof for the validity of the theory; according to the professor, Austen's family had been an extensive one, so that might be one of her cousins that resembles Austen's face. In fact, the lecturer alleges that the portrait belongs to a distant niece of her.

Finally, the lecturer agrees up to a point that the painting style is in analogy with the Humphery's style, but he points out that the cloth which is used in the painting demonstrates that the painting is not done during the time that Austen was a teenager. He states that the person who had been selling so cloth in London had begun to sell it years after the time to which the writer suggests the painting belongs.
