TPO-13 - Integrated Writing Task Private collectors have been selling and buying fossils, the petrified remains of ancient organisms, ever since the eighteenth century. In recent years, however, the sale of fossils, particularly of dinosaurs and other lar

The reading and the lecture are both about fossils and how they are being sold to private collectors. The author says that this will greatly affect the studies of fossils by scientists. This claim is doubted by the lecturer. She points out that the private collectors may make it so that these fossils are made more known to the people.

First of all, the author points out that these fossils will not be known to the world. The author says that these private collectors would not share it to the public like museums do. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She states that the private collectors would be more likely to sell them. She goes on by saying that the private collectors may even sell the fossils to people like teachers, so that the world knows more of them.

Secondly, the author mentions that the scientists would lose access to many of the fossils. The author mentions that the scientists may lose evidence to crucial life forms. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that the private collectors would actually give the fossils to scientists. She elaborates on this by mentioning that the private collectors would want to know more about the fossil and eventually would give some to scientists.

Finally, the author states that the fossil collectors would be bad at taking care of the fossils. The article establishes that the private collectors would usually be unprofessional and would make bad use of the fossils. The lecturer on the other hand puts forth another idea. She mentions that the fossil collectors would take good care, because the fossils cost so much.
