TPO-14 - Integrated Writing Task Every year, forest fires and severe storms cause a great deal of damage to forests in the northwestern United States. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice

The article states that salvage logging, which is an effective way of dealing with some disasters like forest fires and severe storm, can have several benefits for both damaged forest and the economy, and then provides three reasons for support. The lecturer, meanwhile, declares that the process of salvage logging can result in bigger damages to this area and its effects on the economy are questionable. She adds that none of these reasons are convincing enough for supporting this issue and refutes all of them.
First, the passage claims that dead trees may have adverse effects on the growth of the new plants and trees because they will take many years to decompose. However, the professor makes the argument that these dead trees can make the soil richer and it is helpful for the growth of future plant generation. She comments that if salvage logging removes the remains of dead trees, it can result in the lack of nutrients in the soil of the forest.
Second, the reading passage asserts that decaying wood is a proper place for insects to live, and they can damage healthy trees if they growth to a larger numbers. Besides, the passage adds that removing these trees can help minimize the dangers of insect infestation. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that dead trees can be a habitat for other species like birds. Thus, she says that they may have long-term benefits in comparison to the damage of salvage logging.
Third, although the reading posits that the salvage logging may have some advantages on the economy like industries that rely on wood and more people from residents can participate as a worker, the professor rejects this claim and declares that its effect on the economy is not remarkable. She comments that, in fact, they need some expensive and hardly maintained vehicles like helicopters to carry and move dead trees. Moreover, this procedure requires skilled labors, which makes it not suitable for residents.
