TPO-14 - Integrated Writing Task Every year, forest fires and severe stormscause a great deal of damage to forests in the northwestern United States. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice

The reading passage and the lecture are both questioning pros and cons of removal of damaged trees from a forset. The author of the snippet believes that trees removal will influence positively on the ecology of the forests. On the other hand, the lecturer considers that the statements made in the reading passage are contravercial, and she reinforces her opinion by providng several examples.

First of all, there is indicated in the reading fragment that forests are choked with the presence of dead trees, which take space and prevent growth of the new trees. However, the speaker asserts that it isn’t right to get rid of the old damaged trees due to their impact in the soil enreachment. Consequently, if people clean forset from dead trees, soil will lack nutrients important for the future trees generations.

The subsequent lecturer agrument is related to the statment made in the excerpt, that removing dead trees will prevent growth of the insect population, which could devastate healthy trees. The speaker disputes this by claiming that not only bad insects live in the dead trees, but also good insects and different species like birds. Thus, depletion of trees can cause deminish of birds and insects population, which are extremely important chains in forest’s ecology.

To sum up, the speaker supposes that arguments made in the reading fragment are slightly questionable, and she believes that removal in damaged tree will cause significant and negative changes in the forest.
