TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States, birds in particular. Unfortunately for b

Both the reading and listening materials discuss the population of birds. To be more specific, the reading believes that the population of birds are decreasing, whereas the lecturer holds a different ideas and thinks that the reading’s arguments are unconvincing.

To begin with, the passages supports its argument by stating that along with the expansion of human population and settlements, wild areas for birds such as forest or grassland are declining. The professor in the lecture refutes this ideas and says that the reading is groundless. In fact, the growth of big cities allows birds to have new habitat. Therefore, they can adapt the city life; indeed, people today can even see birds on streets or the roofs of buildings. As a result, some type of birds decreased in numbers, but others one grew in their population instead.

Furthermore, while the reading’s point is that human agricultural activities limit birds’ living areas, the lecturer claims that people use less land for crops nowadays. In fact, they are developing a new type of crop with higher productivity .

Finally, the passage finishes by claiming that pesticides and poison used to kill insects are greatly damaging birds because they appear in the water and food. In contrast, the reading says that this notion is unreliable. He further fosters his argument by stating that people invented a less toxic chemical already, so birds life will be more safety. Moreover, pesticide plants do not harm birds.
