The reading and the lecture are both about Torreya taxifoha, which is a type of evergreen plant grow in Florida and started to diminish in the 1950s. The author of the reading believes that there are three ways to protect this tree from extinction. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that none of those ways can prevent the extinction of that plant.
First of all, the author points out that to reestablish Torreya in the same location in which it consistently grew for thousands of years. It is mentioned that the state of Florida was home for this tree because it has microclimate weather that a relatively small area has a different weather condition from the region which that area is part it. Microclimate area’s weather is wetter and cooler than other areas. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says this small area weather is affected by the large area's weather. Furthermore, she argues global warming has its own effect on the Florida weather because day after day more area becomes drier.
Secondly, the author contends that to move the tree from its original place to a new place. The article notes that a place far from Florida in forests because of having cooler weather than other places in a process called assisted migration in which human help in moving the tree. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests this method is also not working by providing one example when the black tree is moved to the north, it spread so fasts and became the cause of extinction of other plants. She elaborates on this by mentioning that assisted migrants can sometimes have a bad result on the hostile inhabitants.
Finally, the author states that it can be kept in the research center. The seeds and saplings can be brought from wild and preserved in a closed environment so it is easy to protect and research. The lecturer, on the hand, posits that doing so might cause some diseases to the plant because the same plant will not resist diseases for a long term in such a small area. She puts forth the idea that to prevent from disease large area or genetic diversity is needed, but trees can satisfy this condition in wild. In conclusion, the lecturer effectively casts doubt on all of the claims and theories presented in the reading.
