TPO-18 - Integrated Writing Task In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya wi

In this set of material, the passage and the lecture provide two opposing points of view about the possibility of saving Torreya from becoming extinct. While the passage offers three ways to preserve the Torreya, the lecturer claims that all these ways won't be successful.
First, the article suggests that to reestablish Torreya in the same location in which it thrived for thousands of year. The lecture contradicts this idea by pointing out that the current location of these trees is much drier than before because of the global warming. That is why the Torreya tree has no chance to survive.
In addition, the writer asserts that by moving these trees to a new environment, we can save the tree. On the other hand, the speaker contrasts this idea by recalling an unsuccessful experience about moving the black locust trees to a new environment. They speared very quickly and destroyed many other species. The same can happen with this case.
Finally, the author argues that we can preserve the Torreya in research centers by collecting seeds and saplings from the wild and grow them in a closely monitored environment, but the speaker refutes this idea too by pointing out that the Torreya is a very vulnerable tree and it can only resist disease when it completely grow and become big and the small ones have not the chance of survival from disease. In this condition, we don't have enough capacity in a center to keep them safe.
