The passage rejects this idea by introducing the claim that if the ecosystem disturbances were the reason of this reduction, it should have affected other sea animals as well as sea cows but there is no evidence of a decline in other marine animals like whales.
Finally, the author states that the main cause of this extinction could have been European fur traders who came to the island after 1741. The passage claims that according to their weapons, they were able to kill a large number of animals quickly. on the other hand, the speaker throws down this remark by illustrating the fact that the extinction of these creatures had already started before the arrival of the European fur traders, therefore they cannot consider as the main reason of this extinction. The lecture also states that the main reason for the extinction is still unknown.
