The reading passage and lecture have conflicting opinions about how to preserve the extinct population of Torrey which is the evergreen tree. The article strongly postulates that there are three ways to increase its population. On the other hand, the listening adamantly delineates that none of the author's points provides satisfying solutions to this problem.
First and foremost, the lecturer points out that microclimate cannot help them to survive in this area because it has been no longer cool and wet anymore. Global warming has occurred on this planet in recent years, so in the northern part of Florida is also affected by it. As a result, it cannot be a suitable condition to thrive these trees due to its drought. Nonetheless, the author offsets these points by declaring that reintroduction of this tree population in where they thrived once thousands of years ago help them because it has favourable weather which is microclimate.
On top of this, the professor further asserts that if humans aid them to flourish in some adopted area, they will harm to other native plants and trees. She takes Black Lucas tree as an example, these trees once reintroduced far from their native environment. Even though their population increased, they killed a substantial amount of native trees and plants near them. Therefore, it is not a good idea to plant them in other areas. These claims refute the author's indications about they will grow in completely different environments. if humans help them to migrate in another field, their seeds and sapling will become successful in these new locations.
Lastly, the speaker in the lecture suggests that if Torreya population is kept in laboratory condition, they will lose their ability to resist disease due to the fact that this skill can work only in a large and diverse environment. Consequently, as long as this research centre cannot satisfy its criteria, it does not help them to survive in the future. Nevertheless, the article counters these implications by insisting that humans have to preserve Torrey in research centres because it is easier to carefully examine and protect them from wild dangers.
