Essay topics

Both the reading and the lecturer discuss the ways of saving Torreya taxifoha, which was a common tree in Florida, from becoming extinct. The author of the reading states three arguments considered by experts to solve this problem. The professor, however, finds them unsatisfactory.

The first way suggested by the text is to reestablish Torreya taxifoha to another place in which it can grow. The lecturer, however, points out that in recent decades, the climate changed because either global warming has increased or wetlands have been drained. So; most areas became drier for the Torreya taxifoha.

Another way for the Torreya taxifoha's survival is moving it to the entirely different area. The speaker, on the other hand, draws attention to the same experiment. Once a plant called Black Locust tree was moved to different habitat for the same purpose. In the end, it spread dramatically and killed many other species and causes them to be a line on being extinct.

Lastly, the reading claims that it can be preserved in a research center by providing proper circumstances. The professor, by contrast, believes that the Torreya taxifoha will not be able to resist diseases because it needs a larger and more diversified habitat. A research center will not capable of providing these opportunities.
