TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task

The author of the reading states that steady increase on human population and use of agriculture and pesticides harm bird population. The professor, on the other hand, refutes each of the arguments made in the article.

First off, the reading believes that the increase of human population and settlement cause decrease on the bird population. The lecturer, however, points out that human expansion and settlements provide other birds with better and large habitat. You can even see birds such as hawks or pigeons on streets. So, some bird population may shrink but others increases. She also says that there is not unique decrease, but overall increase on birds population.

According to the article, since the human population constantly increases, agricultural activities also increases at the same time. Since wild places will convert agricultural areas, birds population will get influenced from this negatively. The speaker, by contrast, explains that fewer lands will be used for agricultural activities in the future because of new productive crops. Since they are more productive and effective in terms of productivity per specific land area, there will be no need to use more lands for agriculture.

Finally, the passage claims that since pesticides used in agriculture leak water sources or food chains of birds, they kill birds indirectly. the lecturer, however, points out that this will not be the same in the future. There are two changes in agriculture. First, farmers will use less toxic pesticides and second, scientists have developed pest-resistant crops, which do not need any pesticides. As a result, pesticides will not harm birds.
