TPO-20 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, it had been common practice since the late 1960s no to suppress natural forest fires. The “let it burn” policy assumed that forest fire would burn themselves out quickly, without causing much dama

The reading passage suggests three kinds of damage caused by 'let it burn' which dedicated not to suppress natural forest fires including the plant life, animal population, and the local economy. However, the professor cast doubts on each idea of the author.

First and foremost, the article states that after the Yellowstone park fire which burned for more than two months and spread large area, the most plant species endangered and some of them extinct. On the other hand, the lecturer rejecter this by saying that the park colonized by new plants after the fire because it provides an opportunity for new small plants to grow. Moreover, she said that some plants which require high heat grow in the Yellowstone park which makes it diverse plants after the fire.

Secondly, the passage indicates that the fire also destroyed the wildlife because of the disruption of a food chain and destruction habitat makes it hard to live. In contrast, the lecturer argued that the fire also creates an ideal habitat for small animals to live. As a result, the predators of them also live that forest which makes the wildlife more diverse.

Finally, the reading claims that the damage of the fire has a negative impact on the local economy because it not attract the tourist anymore. Nonetheless, the professor made a counterclaim to this by explaining that the tourists would not visit the place if the fire occurs often. But, the natural fire is rare and the tourists visit the Yellowstone after the fire because the new wildlife exists in there.
