The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about merits and demerits have to with "modified trees". Considering this, the author offers three advantages of modified trees. The professor, on the other hand, not only refutes the author's assessments, but also asserts that the announced option runs counter to the ways that the reading just argued. The lecturer demonstrates three reasons to reject the options in the reading.
The first criticism of the passage against which the lecture argues is that modified trees can be more resistant that nature trees. As stated by the professor, there some species of trees, which are resistant in various situations. For example, if the climate alters, they can be survived. However, modified trees are designed to resist in particular areas. Therefore, if any difference occurs in the area like rainfall change, all the modified trees will be wiped out. So, it is a fallacious conclusion that the modified trees are harder.
Moreover, unlike the passage which claims that modified trees bring farmers about economic privileges, due to growing faster, giving greater food, which give farmers a chance to save their money. The professor illustrates that there are hidden cost associated with modified trees so that farmers should pay companies which have designed these trees, whenever they want to plant modified trees. Hence, it is not economical.
Finally, the lecture contradicts the fallacy of the passage that modified trees preserve natural trees due to the fact that modified trees satisfy the demand for natural trees, saying that modified trees damage natural trees owing to the fact that they grow aggressively, and they compete with wild trees for resources such as water.
All in all, the professor maintains that even though modified trees have many merits, the demerits of it outweigh its merits.
