TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

In the lecture, the professors thinks planting genetically modified tress on large scale cause problems and the benefied mentioned in the reading passage may not be as true.

First and foremost, it is true the genetically modified tress can be desighed to resist certain kind of threat such as pests, but the natural plants are more genetically diverse. So even some of the natural individuals dies because some reasons such as climate change or pest, others that are able to resist those threatening factors can survive and keep the whole species safe. But the genetically modified tress are genetically uniformed. Once those genetically modified meet some unpredictable dangers, they will all be wiped out.

Moreover, compared with the natural seeds, famers need to cost more money on planting genetically modified trees. Because the company that sells the genetically modified species will charge the farmers and not allow them to keep the seeds after harvest in order to protect their property. Therefore, genetically modified trees will not necessarily bring economic benefits to the farmers that grow them.

Last but not the least, the genetically modified trees usuallly grow more agressively so they can outcompete with the native species. The genetically motified species will threat the natural ones by competeing for the rescouces such as sunlight and nutrients. In this way, the native and natural species will be in trouble.

Based on the aforementioned analysis, the professor doesn't agree with the benefits in the reading passage.
