The reading states that there are some advantages of genetically modified trees and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer explains that despite the benefits there are downsides also and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the reading claims that the genetically modified trees resist the diseases. So these trees are more able to survive. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that the normal trees have various genetics and some of them would be atypical trees, hence, they would resist the diseases and tough conditions naturally. On contrary, the genetically modified trees are uniform, so, if there are any negative changes in their environment they might all die.
Secondly, the article points out that these trees offer economic profits, However, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that these trees would cost more than normal ones. She clarifies that farmers should pay money for the seeds every time they want to plan.
Thirdly, the reading mentions that the genetically modified trees would provide more wood demands so, that would protect the native trees. However, the professor counters this idea by explaining that in fact, these trees could be aggressive and compete with the native species of trees for nutrients and water. As a result, the genetically modified trees would cause more damage to their environment.
