TPO-34 - Integrated Writing Task A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see

The reading and the lecture are about a Steller's sea cow. The reading states that there are three possible hypothesizes to explain the cause behind the extinction of these creatures and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer explains that there is no clear cause of this extinction and refutes each of the reading thesis.
First of all, the reading claims that these animals might be overhunted by the residents in Siberian to feed on them. However, the professor opposes this idea by explaining that these animals are massive and people did not need a lot of them as a food source. He clarifies that one of Steller's sea cow could weigh about ten tons so, it is not likely the hunt would be the cause of extinction.
Secondly, the reading mentions that the marine environment could be changed at that time, hence, the food for these creatures could be declined. However, the professor counters this point by pointing out that if that changes happened, it would have an effect on other species like whales. According to the professor, the whales did not decrease in number at all in that period.
Thirdly, the article says that the European traders with their guns could kill a huge number of these animals. However, the lecturer posits this point by saying that the number of these populations had already decreased before the traders came to the island. So they would not have a responsibility for the extinction.
