TPO-22 - Integrated Writing Task Ethanol fuel, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, has been advocated by some people as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. However, many critics argue that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasol

The reading passage states three reasons that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline, whereas the lecture points out that the ethanol is a good alternative to gasoline.

Firstly, the author insists that using ethanol cannot solve global warming for burning it will also release carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas. The professor, however, argues that it is true burning ethanol will release carbon dioxide. But the ethanol is extracted from plants, and growing plants can counteract the release of carbon dioxide since plants can absorb carbon dioxide and remove it from the atmosphere.

Secondly, the reading deems that the available plants used in other fields may reduce. To satisfy ten percent of fuel needed requires sixty percent of corn grown to produce ethanol, thus the house-stock will lose appreciable source of food. In contrast, the speaker reckons that we can use cereal which is a main component of cell wall to produce ethanol. While the cereal will not be eaten by animals, the available source of food for animals will not decrease.

Lastly, the author says that ethanol cannot compete with gasoline on price. And without government's financial support the price of ethanol will increase drastically. On the contrary, the professor rebuts it by saying that the support of government is not always needed. If there are more people buy ethanol, then the production of it will increase, as a result, the price of ethanol decline. In addition, the price of ethanol can decrease forty percent, if the productions of it are threefold than it is now.
