The lecture and the reading passage both discuss the possible causes of decline of yellow cedar as a type of trees that live in northwestern North America. On one hand, the reading clearly stats that there are several hypotheses for this steady decline since 1880. On the other hand, the lecture refutes these hypotheses, by saying it is implausible and questionable.

To begin with, the reading states there was type of insect attach the cedar trees, that led to killing yellow cedar. However, the lecture argues that these trees strong enough to resist these insects because it has toxic substances that kill these insects.

Secondly, the reading makes argument that bears responsible to trees decline due to presence of sweet materials inside the trees and bears to take it, they have to broken trees. Conversely, the lecture refutes this claims by pointing that bears not the main cause of the all trees decline, because in some places there were not any bears.

Lastly, the reading states that the third cause due to climate changes, so the temperature changes have affected the roots growth, and it cause partial freezing on cold winter, and at the end killing the trees. The lecture refutes that by pointing out, the trees with lower elevation have warmer climate and these trees also died.
