TPO-23 - Integrated Writing Task Populations of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been steadily declining for more than a century now, since about 1880. Scientists have advanced several hypotheses expla

In this reading, a species of tree called yellow cedar are declining possibly due to three reasons, however, according to the lecture, the evidence of all reasons are not adequate to prove to attribute to their declining.

First of all,the reading claims that insect parasites especially the cedar bark beetle may lead to their declining. However, the lecture assumes that yellow cedar is more resistant to the cedar bark beetle than other trees, so they are unlikely to damage so many trees. What’s more, the beetles choose to attack the sick trees, which probably will die in spite of the beetles’ attack.

In addition, the declining of yellow cedar trees are declining in many parts of the country. They are also declining in Ireland, while there is no bear in Ireland, so we cannot blame the declining on bears as well.

At last, the theory about roots is not convincing, too. The hypothesis is based on the assumption that trees are more likely to die in cold climates, however, according to the research, many more trees died in warm weather than cold weather, which proves that the timing of root growth is not the cause of declining of the yellow cedar.

In conclusion, the reason of why the trees are declining are not obvious. We can not blame the declining on insect parasites, the bears or the climate due to the above reasons.
