TPO-24 - Integrated Writing Task Animal fossils usually provide very little opportunity to study the actual animal tissues, because in fossils the animals' living tissues have been largely replaced by minerals. Thus, scientists were very excited recently

The reading and the lecture both discuss recent discovery of fossil of Tyrannosaurus. While the reading claims that the researchers found remains of actual tissues of the animal, the professor refutes, saying that this claim is skeptical, and contradicts the arguments made in the article.

First, the reading states that small branching channels in the leg bone resemble the hollows in the bones where blood vessels were found. However, the professor indicates that the material found in theses hollows are colonized bacteria which often turned into organic material. So, it could be just bacterial residue.

Secondly, the article asserts that the spheres found in the microscopic examination are more likely to be red blood cells. This point is challenged by the professor. He explains that identical spheres were found in other fossil which did not have red blood cells. So, these spheres could be just reddish minerals.

Finally, the article posits that the research revealed that there was collagen in the fossil. The professor opposes this point by stating that collagen has never been found in fossil more than hundred years ago. Therefore, the professor assumes that this collagen material could be from recent source such as the skin of the researchers who handled the fossil.
