The main topic of both the passage and the lecture is about potential effects of the zebra mussel on the east cost of North America. Considering this, the author claims that the zebra mussel are going to have detrimental influances in coastal areas. The professor, on the other hand, utterly denis whatever mentioned in the passage through citing three reasons.
First, both the passage and the lecture talk about possibility of controlling this species. According to the passage, as this species used to spread through Europe so rapidlly, we are going to experience same thins as it. Nevertheless, the professor rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that despite incapability of controlling of it in past, there are numerous way to avoid the same problem that occurred in Europe. For example, the government should regulate ships to release their balasst water before going to freshwater, because the saltwater will eradicate them.
Second of all, both the passage and the lecture discuss the issue of domination of the species in their new inhabitant. The passage goes on to mention that the zebra mussel will occupy large areas because there is no predator of them. The professor, nevertheless, supports the contradictory notion; he describes that although at first the author's statement would be correct, with the passage of time local birds will exploit them as a new source of food. Therefore, the zebra mussel will not dominate.
Eventually, the passage and the lecture both discuss feasible decline in the population of sea creatures especially fishes. The author of the reading states that since the zebra mussel feed on plankton, there would not sufficient resources for other fishes. The professor, however, rebuts it, saying that the declination in overall population of fishes is not logical, thus the zebra mussel will provide extra nutrients for bottom of the river fishes.
