TPO-26 - Integrated Writing Task The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot b

The lecturer discusses how the zebra mussels can not be threaten to the North America's fish population. This casts doubt on the reading which states that zebra shellfish mussels from Eastern Europe have negative effects on North America's under sea's life. In what follow, she mentioned some reasons.

first of all, the professor asserts that spreading of mussels could be controlled. for example, ships can empty out their water from Eastern Europe and fill with salt water which is not a good environment for mussels. Therefore, mussels would not attach to the ship's bottom. This contradicts with the text which states that mussels can get stick to the ships and be carried by them.

Moreover, The speaker asserts that local birds can change their habits and eat some mussels. Therefore, mussels would not be dominant creatures under the sea. This opposes the reading which cites that because mussel's survival under the sea is more than fish, therefore after a while these shellfish would have some disadvantage affects on other creatures.

Finally, the lecturer states that bottom eating fish population could increase as well as mussels population does. This refutes the reading which claims that because mussels eat plankton therefore, they would decrease the amount of fish eating plankton.

In conclusion, the professor disagrees with the reading on all three points, and believe that human and animals could control mussels spread so, they are not a big threat to North America's fish life.
