TPO 28

In this set of materials, the reading passage states that Robert E. Peary reached the North Pole in 1909, and it brings several strong reasons for this claim. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading points by providing different reasons (and examples).

First and foremost, the reading indicates that the National Geographic Society sent a committee for searching for Robert's claims, and they declared that Robert had reached the North Pole. In contrast, the speaker opposes this view by mentioning that this committee was not objective; because the members of a committee were Robert's close friends. And they spend a lot of money on Robber's trip. Also, they searched only 2 days of investigation, so this reporter would not be careful and accurate. It seems biased and trustworthy.

Furthermore, the reading argues that Tom Avery could reach the North Pole in the less than 37 days, and he had the same trek as Robert, so it supports Peary’s claim. Conversely, what the lecturer state is different. She points out that Tome condition was different from Robert condition. Tome carried much less weight than Robert because his food was carried by helicopter. Also, the weather condition was favorable than Robert weather condition. Indeed, the Tom Avery condition was not the same as Robert's condition, and it is not profit for Robert's claim.

Finally, according to the reading, measuring the shadows of Robert's photographs shows that the Surf position has the correct position as it should have been at the North Pole on that day. However, the professor believes that this measuring does not prove any things. Also, the photographs are fuzzy and slightly. Thus, new persist measuring shadows do not show the correct sun position.
