TPO 28-integrated

As it was stated in the reading passage, it is the author's belief that Robert E.Peary, who was a well-known adventurer, was able to reach North Pole in 1909. S/he provided three arguments to substantiate this claim. On the contrary, the lecturer finds the justification of the author unconvincing and casts doubt on the claim by producing some counter arguments.

Initially, the author brought up the idea that the National Geographic Society's committee declared that Peary had reached the North Pole. However, the lecturer is thoroughly doubtful about the reliability of this idea. As she points out that some of the committee members were Peay's close friends who had contributed large amounts of money on his journey. Moreover the investigation only lasted for two days, which is not a enough time to examine the consistency of Peary's accounts. So the committee's report was biased and not valid.

Another emphasized point in the reading was that it is possible to travel the distance in 37 days as Tom Avery, a British explorer, recently made the same trek using the dog-sled that Peary had in less than 37 days. On the other hand the lecturer refutes this one too by asserting that Avery carried much less baggage with because he was not carrying his food with him. In addition the weather conditions are an important issue. Avery traveled in way better weather conditions than Peary.

As the last point, the author drew attention to the fact that photographs taken by Peary support his claim. By measuring the shadows in Peary's photos and comparing them with sun's position in NY, it can be concluded that Peary's position was in North Pole. Yet again, the lecturer deems this idea invalid as well by stating that the technic, which is used to calculate Peary's whereabouts, is very precise. But Peary used a primitive camera to shoot his photos and the shadows are not precise in them. Moreover the photos were taken so long ago and they were faded and blurred.
