TPO 28 Integrated Writing Task

The reading and lecture both discuss if Peary reached the North Pole or no. While the reading provides three explanations to support the idea that Peary already catch the North Slope, The professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.

Firstly, the reading avers that after the National Geographic society investigation, the committee declared that Peary reached the North Slope. However, the professor argues this notion by saying that this is true that the committee declared that, but this committee was not objective. This is because this committee was done by Peary's friends who got money to fund this trip. In addition, this investigations were just for two days long. So, the results were not accurate or trustful.

Secondly, the reading mentions that Peary reached the North Slope during 37 day as long as Avery's trip. Moreover, Peary used the same tools as Avery during his trip. On the other hand, the professor questions this idea by pointing out that tom's trip is completely different than Peary's trip. For instance, Avery had less weight because he did not travel with food. in addition, the food was dropped by plain. Furthermore, the weather condition during Avery's trip was more favorable than Peary's trip. As a result, this claim did not support the idea that Peary reached the North Pole.

Lastly, the reading states that the shadows of the photo that had been taken by Peary confirms the sun's position in North Pole area. So, this is a great evidence that Peary was there. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this idea by explaining that the technique that used to measure the sun's position is not precise. Furthermore, we can not examine the sun's position that way. Moreover, this Peary took this photo one hundreds years ago with unfocused camera. So, the photo is not accurate and faded with time. Consequently, the shadow blurred and we can not measure the sun's position.
