TPO-28 - Integrated Writing Task Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him

The author of the reading passage and the professor both discuss whether or not Robert E. Peary did reach the North Pole on April 7. 1909. The author explains three theories to prove this idea. However, the professor thinks that the author's reasons contain some defects.

First of all, the author claims that the committee of the National Geographic Society investigated the Peary's records and equipment, and declared that Peary did reach the North Pole. However, the professor indicates that the committee's membership is Peary's friend, and the committee contributed the funding to support the Peary's trip. And according to Peary himself, the investigation only last for 2 days, the investigators didn't look it through.

In addition, the author states that Tom Avery who is a British explorer used the same equipment as Peary had and took the same way like Peary did. Avery accomplished this tour less than 37 days, and he proved that Peary didn't tell a lie. On the contrary, the professor asserts that Avery had much less weight than Peary did. Moreover, the weather condition was totally different. When Avery traveled to the North Pole, his weather was more favorable than Peary when he did the same trek.

Finally, the author raises the point that according to the photos, the shadows showed that the sun's position was exactly in the North Pole. On the other hand, the professor contends that the photos were taken 100 years ago, the images were already blurred and faded away. The photos can't detect correctly sun's positions whether were same in the North Pole.
