TPO 29- Integrated

The reading part proposes that the elephant-sized Edmontosaur survived the winter and its adverse climate in Alaska’s North Slope by migrating south to the more favorable region. Then it brings up some arguments supporting the migration hypothesis. However, the professor finds these surmises dubious and refutes them all.

The first problem with the reading passage is the idea of Edmontosaurs’ diet that supports the migration hypothesis. As Edmontosaurs fed only on plants, they had to migrate to more temperate climate to find food, which was not available in the winter season in Alaska's North Slope. On the contrary, the lecturer in the speaking part maintains that Alaska's North Slope was warmer than it is today. On the other hand, in the summertime in Alaska's North Slope, there is 24-hour sunlight which provides a circumstance plants can overgrow. Hence, there was plenty of vegetation there and made possible that Edmontosaur had sufficient food like dead plants in the winter to feed on.

Another bug with the reading part is that Edmontosaurs lived in herd results in they took benefit of living in herd to migrate as some modern-day cattle like buffalos or caribous do. In contrast, the professor undermines this idea by asserting that living in herd also has other meaning like to increase their protection from predators. For example, a type of elks in the arctic forest live in a herd, but they do not migrate. Ergo, drawing the conclusion that Edmontosaurs lived in a herd in order to better coordinate their migration is an inconclusive and rudimentary outcome.

A third trouble with the passage is that the reading contends that Edmontosaurs were physically capable enough to migrate long distances. Contrarily, the professor undercuts this idea owing to the fact that also Edmontosaur had offspring, dependent on their parents to survive, they could not leave them behind in Alaska's North Slope. In fact, the idea of being powerful enough seems inconclusive hypothesis to support the migration hypothesis.
