Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska’s North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, Arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive, the environment of the North Slope was already inhospitable, especially during the winter when it experienced several months of total darkness. How did the dinosaurs survive the wintertime? Paleontologists have proposed that one of the most common North Slope dinosaurs, the elephant-sized edmontosaur (Edmontosaurus), survived the winter by migrating south to more hospitable regions. Several arguments support the migration hypothesis.
The reading and lecture are both about how Edmontosaurus dinosaurs were survived during the winter period. The author of the reading feels that they migrated from the North slope to south slope when the environment was too much erratic. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that the hypothesis made up by Paleontologists is not convincing.
First, the author argues that Edmontosaurus eat plant and during the winter period plant could not grow and food is meagre. He also states that it made Edmontosaurus migrate to another region to search for food. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that before the north pole was warmer than today and during the summer sun sunshine 24 hours. As a result, plants grew plentiful and therefore, dead plants were abundant.
Second, the writer suggests that Edmontosaurus bones were founded on the same site which implies that they migrate to the domestic. However, the lecturer rebuts this by lived in a hard does not mean that they migrated because Rosebalt animal lived in the herd but did not migrate. He also mentions that animal lives in the herd to protect themselves from the predator.
Third, the author posits that Edmontosaurus are physically strong and they were capable to travel such long distance. Moreover, he elaborates the point by mentioning that this animal was so fast and speeds up to 45 Km per hour by using locomotive power. In contrast, the lecturer position is that it may be true but in such cold weather how animal travel such speed. He also noted that in a harsh environment it was not possible.
