The reading passage and the lecture discuss the purpose and the meaning of the ancient carved stone balls in Scotland. The reading brings up three theories about the purpose of these stones. However, the lecture brings up three reasons to rebut all dubious theories presented in the passage and states that none of these theories are convincing.
First of all, the writer holds the view that these stones were used as weapons. In contrast, the speaker refutes this idea and underlines the fact that this theory is not acceptable. In fact, if these stones were used as weapons, the signs of damage would be seen on their surface. However, archeologists have not reported signs of serious damage on the surface of these stones.
Second of all, the author contends that the stones had been used as a primitive system for measuring weight. Indeed, archaeologists have found these stones in various sizes and this observation has led them to this theory. However, the lecture contradicts this contention and asserts that these stone balls do not have logical properties as a measuring tool. In fact, carved stone balls are from various types of stones. Accordingly, they have different masses. In other words, two balls with the same size and same shape that have been made from different material may have different weight, since the density of all material is not the same.
Finally, the writer states that social status is another possible purpose of these stones, since the stones have signs on their surface. On the contrary, the speaker rebuts this statements and stress that this theory has not considered the properties of social status. In fact, the signs of some of these stones are really simple to be used as statues. In addition, ancient people buried the social status with the dead person. However, archeologists have not found any of these stone in grave or tones.
