Both the passage and the lecture discuss about extinction of a kind of marine mammal called sea cow. The article brings three theories for expressing causes of the mentioned phenomena; none the less, the professor puts those hypothesizes under question. According to the professor, none of these reasons are convincing.
First, as the passage claimed, sea cows could be extinct by native hunters. The number of sea cows have been gradually decreased by overhunting; however, the lecturer doesn't reinforce the idea by illustrating the small population of Siberia; actually, he believes the number of people who live there is so a few that can't lead sea cows to be extinct.
Next, as expressed by the passage sea cow population might be declined when there encountered lack of food; indeed, the change in the ecosystem caused them to be died; nevertheless, the lecturer rejects this hypothesis by adding the fact that decreasing in the amount of food resource occurred years after the extinction; therefore, sea cows’ extinction didn't happen because of food shortage.
Finally, the passage mentioned the idea of foreign hunter as a main cause, it responses the European hunter as a factor of extinction; on the other hand, the professor doesn't validate this theory by emphasizing that the population of sea cows was already small before fur traders comes.
