In this set of materials, both the lecturer and reading passage discuss the sea cows which are animals that would live in Siberia. The text presents three theories about the extinction of sea cows; However, the professor refutes all these theories and mentions the main cause of their extinction is still unknown.

Firstly, the professor articulates that sea cows are massive animals, they are about 9 meters long and weigh up to 10 tones. So, if the indigineous people would hunt them, they could feed on them for several months. Therefore, we can overlook their influence in the extinction of the sea cows. On the other hand, the article contends that the sea cows were a good source of food for the native people and it is possible that they overhunted the sea cows.

Moreover, the lecturer avers that if the number of kelps had been decreased, it must have some impacts on the other species in the ecosystem; For example the nuber of the whales should have been declined but it did not observed. Conversly, the text asserts that the sea cows population may have been affected by the ecosystem disturbances such as kelp reduction.

Finally, the professor declares that when the European fur traders came to the Siberia, the population of the sea cows had been fallen already. As a result, it is improbable that the European traders were had a pivotal role in the extiction of the sea cows and there must be another major factor which reslulted in the dying out of sea cows. On the contrary, the reading passage alleges that it is recorded that the fur traders caught the last sea cow in 1768 and as a result, they are responsible for the extiction of the sea cows.
