The reading and the lecture discuss the main reason of Staller’s sea cow extinction. The passage claims that scientists have found three theories about this extinction. However, the lecture brings up three reasons to refute all dubious idea presented in the passage and state that none of these theories are convincing.
First of all, the writer holds the view that overhunting by native people is the main reason of sea cows' extinction. In contrast, the speaker rebuts this idea and underlines that fact that local people did not need that much food to lead them for overhunting. In fact, sea cows were very massive and the average weight of them was 10 tone, so people of a small village could consume a sea cow meat for a month. In addition, the local population was not very much, so they did not need to hunt too many sea cows.
Second of all, the author contends that lack of food may cause sea cows population to be disappear. However, the lecture contradicts this contention and asserts that the ecosystem change is not the reason for sea cows extinction. Indeed, if something severely really happened in the ecosystem, the result of it would be shown in other parts of the ecosystem too. For example, if the kelp population shrink had happened, whales would experience food shortage too. However, no one has reported a reduction in whale’s population on that time.
Finally, the writer states that European fur traders’ hunting has an effect on sea cows' extinction. On the contrary, the speaker refutes this statement and stresses that the reduction in sea cows had been started before arriving European fur trade to Siberia. In other words, we should look for the reason 100 years before fur traders arriving. Consequently, this theory is not convincing.
