TPO 36 integrated writing

The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about whether adding the chemical silver iodide decrease the amount of damages after spaying on storm clouds or not. In the text, the author believes that there are some evidence which have shown the impact of these materials. The lecturer challenges all the arguments mentioned in the reading passage. She is of the opinion that none of this evidence is convincing.

Firstly, the author states that laboratory experiments have shown the silver prevent the formation of hail. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although the addition of silver may prevent the formation of hail, it will adversely affect in other aspects. Furthermore, she says that these phenomena, formation of snow rather than hail, may leads to some dry seasons and lack of water in some areas. Thus, the plants will be damaged in these situations.

Moreover, the author asserts that there are some evidence in some Asian countries which support the truth of its claims. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this claim and says that this evidence are not clear enough because if these phenomena had been affected in various nearby areas, it could not be very strong evidence. She believes that cloud seeding might happen in these areas as a result of natural changes. Therefore, it is not relevant to the silver addition.

Eventually, the writer holds the opinion that in some local studies such as central states of United States the value of cloud seeding was proved. The lecturer, however, dismisses it by asserting that these studies were not convincing. She mentions that these areas are much polluted and the pollution might affect these studies. It is possible that these studies are not repeatable in non-polluted area.
