In 1995 a microscopic fungus called Phytophthora ramorum, or P. ramorum, was first detected in the forests of the western United States. P. ramorum infects trees and causes particularly serious damage in oak trees: in many infected oaks, leaves wither rapidly, large cracks appear in the bark, and the trees die. A spread of P. ramorum represents a serious threat to the forests in the western states. Several methods of protecting the forests have been proposed.

The reading and lecture are both about Phytophthora ramorum which was identified on the of the western United States and cause serious damage to the tree. The author of the lecture presents some methods the protect the tree. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that unfortunately, the method described has serious limitation and impractical.

Firstly, the argues that spores which are the small materials through which fungi spread and this material founded in the human shoes and bicycle tires. He also states that it is an easy solution from spreading if new bicycle tire installed and influence the hiker to wash the shoes. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He mentions that it will not impact hugely because human shoes and tire are not only the cause of spreading. The water is also responsible and when rains disease spread and one possible solution is to control the rainwater.

Second, the writer suggests that some kind of chemical of fungi can be used to protect the oak trees because research has shown that a small number of tryouts decline in the infected area. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that it is effective only for several months. Moreover, it required to inject to the tree which is difficult. He also mentions that there at least thousand of oak tree in the forest and need to identify each tree and then inject that chemical every time after several months which is really impractical.

Third, the author posits that cleaning and burning the infected tree can spread the disease to the uninfected trees. He claims that destroy the area where the infected trees found could solve the problem. In contrast, the lecturer position is that destroy a large part of area is not a good notion and it will be created harmful ecological problem. He also noted that cutting large part of habitat could not possibly safe the healthy trees.
