TPO 39

In this set of materials, the reading passage discusses that some possible explanation for a mass-extinction that occurred at the end of the Triassic period about 200 million years ago. While in the listening the professor casts doubt o what is presented in the text and believes that none of these theories are the good explanation of this mass-extinction.

First of all, in the text, it is clearly mentioned that the sea level decline is at the end of the Triassic period could be cased this mass-extinction. However, the professor claims that the sea level fluctuation could not be the actual reason for this happen. Because coastal down take place in several million years and this happens could create mass-extinction just if the decrease in the sea level occurred in a short time.

In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that the rise in the amount of SO2 in volcanic activities could create massive climate cooling. She says that it is true that the SO2 can cause the cooling effect, but this cooling effect is not long enough to have the massive influence on climate temperature and led to mass-extinction. Because the SO2 combined with water in the atmosphere and rise down to the ground by Acidic rains.

Finally, in the text, it is stated that an asteroid strike at the end of the Triassic period affected the Earth climate by producing debris and blocking the sunlight. The professor subscribes that it is true that an asteroid impact can create this kind of effect but evidence of asteroid strike back to the 12 million years before this mass-extinction. And it cannot explain this extinction.
