There is a controversy between author and lecturer about the reasons of mass extinction at the end of the Triassic period, 200 million years ago. The author provides three possible reasons that all of them are rejected by the lecturer.
The first cause provided by the author is that in that period the sea levels declined which destroyed the living organisms in the shallow water land, and eventually it resulted in mass extinction by disrupting the food chains. In contrast, the lecturer states that the sea levels changing occurred gradually in that period, so the marine which lived in shallow coastline waters had enough time to adapt to the new conditions due to prevent their extinction. Therefore, changing sea levels is not a convincing reason for mass extinction.
Second, the passage text claims that the huge volcanic activities in that time produced a considerable amount of sulfur dioxide which decreased the global temperature and caused the extinction. The professor opposes this point by saying that the cold period did not last too long to devastate species. Actually, the sulfur dioxide can be washed by rain droplets in a short span before it makes its effects on climate.
Finally, the passage declares that an asteroid impact might collide with earth and produced dust that blocked out sunlight to the ground and made the extinction. On the contrary, the professor mentions that there is no evidence of asteroid impact on the earth surface dated back to the end of the Triassic period.
