The reading specifies that there are three answers explain how humpback whale manage to migrate long distance. However, explainer states that the answers are dobious and not convincing and provides some evidence to refute them all.
First, the humpback whales are more intelligent than other animal and because of their complex brain they can use stars for navigation. Conversley, the professor opposes the idea by saying that there is not a connection between intelligence and sky for orientation. there are others animal like duck use sky to navigate but they have a average cognitive. Duck have this ability since they were born and it is instinct. Therefore, it not a clear connection between navigation and intelligence.
Second, according to the reading, the humpback whale need some external object that helps it to migrate in straight lines for long distance. This creatures swim in the open ocean. Therefore, humpback whale do not rely on earth and stars provide external force. In contrast, the lecturer explains that humpback whale have a bio magnetic in its brain and are sensitive to earth magnatic force. Thus, if humpback whale need external for navigation, it uses the external force of the earth which are sensitive to it.
Third, humpback whales exhibit an unusual behavior know as spy-hopping. It float straight up for minutes at a time and in that time their heads are looking upward to the sky. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this point by reasoning that it is true humpback whale have rare behavior but there are other animals like shark perform spy-hopping. Sharks do not migrate and do not look at sky and they do it to find animals they wanted to hunt. Also, humpback whale do spy-hopping in the day which there are no stars in the sky.
