TPO 39 integrated writing

The topic of the reading passage and the lecture is the great extinction of species at the end of the Triassic period. The author proposes three theories as for the cause of this extinction, while the professor completely denies the theories and provides several reasons for challenging them.

The first theory that the passage proposes is that the decline of the sea level caused the extinction. The author believes that the fluctuation of the sea level affected the species that lived in shallow waters or coastal lines, consequently, the food chain affected and extinction occurred. The lecture, nevertheless, rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that the species were capable of adaptation. He also, points out that the fluctuation of the level of the oceans, had occurred during the millions of years, however, the extinction occurred suddenly.

The author mentions the massive climate cooling as the second theory. The passage illustrates that in that era, the volcanic activity had released and a large amount of Sulfur dioxide had released to the atmosphere. Hence, the global temperature extremely decreased and many species extinct. The lecture refutes this argument and suggests that at the end of the Triassic period, the atmosphere was cleaned. Because the volcanic activity was decreased and the rain had cleaned the weather.

Finally, the passage goes on to mention the asteroid strike as the third theory. The author states that the hitting an asteroid to the earth, displaced a large amount of soil and rocks, hence, the sunlight had blocked and many species became extinct. However, the professor casts doubt on this theory and demonstrates that many scientists have denied the asteroid theory. Furthermore, he illustrates that the hitting of an asteroid occurred twelve million years before the Triassic period.
