TPO-40 - Integrated Writing Task Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would

It is believed that establishing a permanent settlement on Venus is possible. But this belief is widely disputed. Because of the harsh climate of the planet, it is asserted that establishing a lasting human settlement on this planet is not possible. But, several alternate explanation can be given to show that it is indeed possible.

To begin with, the first argument against the possibility of human settlement on Venus is that the climate of this planet exerts a very high amount atmospheric pressure every square centimetre, 100 kg per square centimetre to be exact. And therefore most of the man made structures collapse under such high pressure. But, the fact that establishing an air borne centre is possible has been overlooked. Atmospheric pressure decreases as one ascends in the atmosphere. Therefore, it is possible to construct a floating station that can sustain the pressure which are relatively low at greater heights on the Venus.

Secondly, to contradict the possibility of establishing a centre another argument is the absence of Water and Oxygen in Venus's climate. But the argument can be refuted considering the fact that planet has other elements like carbon dioxide and sulphuric acids that can be used to produce required amounts of Water and Oxygen and therefore, the idea that supply of these elements from the Earth would be needed, can be discarded.

Thirdly, the requirement of energy can be fulfilled at a floating centre by using solar panels that generate electricity from both, the light directly coming from sun and the light that is reflected by the dense clouds in Venus's atmosphere. The clouds that block the light from reaching its surface are present at 50 km above the surface, above that height significant amount of light from sun is available in addition to the light reflected by the clouds below.

Conclusively, establishing a lasting station on the surface of Venus is an impractical idea, but establishing one on Venus is not. For the reasons presented above one can assert that a floating station can be constructed above its surface.
